Turfco T3100 Applicator Training

Ride-on spreader / sprayer • Operation • Best Practices • Service • Safety

Introduction

Meet the T3100

  • The Turfco T3100 is a self-powered, ride-on spreader/sprayer built for high-production lawn application of dry (granular) and liquid turf care products.
  • Covers up to 4,000 sq ft per minute (240,000 sq ft per hour) spreading and/or spraying.
  • 4-wheel machine with automotive-style steering — front wheels steer, rear wheels drive.
  • Operator stands on a vibration-isolated platform at the rear; speed is controlled 0–5 MPH with a simple hand control and foot pedal.
  • The machine stops automatically when the operator releases the speed control or dismounts.
Intended use: application of properly prepared turf care liquid spray and granular products on properly prepared worksites — nothing else.
Introduction

Key Specifications

Engine
Briggs & Stratton INTEK 10.5 HP
Ground Speed
0–5 MPH (3½ MPH spread lever)
Hopper Capacity
2.9 cu ft / 175 lb (with extension)
Spray Tanks
2 × 9 gal = 18 gallons total
Spread Width
Full 16–22 ft • Trim 12–14 ft
Spray Width
Full 9–11 ft • Trim 3–4 ft
Weight
500 lb empty / 825 lb loaded
Fuel
2 gal gasoline
Production rate: 4,000 sq ft/min. Effective spread swaths are 18/9 ft (wide) and 12/6 ft (narrow) — the spreader needs 100% overlap for even coverage.
Operation

Operator Driving Controls

  • Parking Brake Lever — ON whenever the operator is off the machine.
  • Freewheel Lever — puts the transaxle in neutral so the machine can be pushed by hand. Must be in normal (left) position during operation.
  • Engine Throttle — run at FAST during application for constant, even ground speed.
  • Forward/Reverse Speed Control — squeeze forward to go, pull back for reverse, release to stop.
  • Forward Speed Control Pedal (green) — controls forward speed with your foot so hands are free for spreader/sprayer controls. Forward only.
  • Steering Wheel — automotive style, with spinner knob.
  • 3½ MPH Speed Lever — limits ground speed for spreading only — never use while spraying.
Releasing the speed control automatically applies dynamic braking — the machine stops within a few feet.
Operation

Before You Start — Daily Checklist

  • Read the operator's manual and complete training before first use.
  • Check the engine oil level and the transaxle fluid level.
  • Check tire pressure (inflate to the PSI marked on the tire).
  • Fill with fresh, approved gasoline — never refuel while the engine is hot or running.
  • Inspect for loose nuts, bolts, hardware, or anything abnormal.
  • Confirm all guards and covers are secure — never operate without them.
  • Test every control from the operator platform before starting; check the platform locking knob is locked.
  • Confirm the fuel shut-off valve is open and the parking brake is set before starting.
Operation

Learning to Drive

  • Practice first in a large, smooth, paved area like a parking lot — not on a lawn.
  • Stand on the platform, one hand on the support bar, one on the wheel. Release the brake, then squeeze the speed control forward slowly.
  • Practice releasing the speed control repeatedly to get used to the automatic braking.
  • Try reverse using the lever under the left support bar — slowly.
  • Drive in all modes: fast, slow, turns, figure 8s, and backing — for at least 10 minutes.
  • Practice at least 30 minutes in varied conditions and simulate tight spots (e.g., between a fence and an AC unit) before ever applying product.
It can take several hours of practice to develop the skill to properly applicate a lawn. Don't rush it — operating before you're ready can damage the machine, the lawn, or you.
Safety

Curbs, Slopes & Hills

  • Use curb cuts and driveways whenever possible.
  • Climbing a curb: approach at 45°, stop a few inches away, dismount, hold the wheel firmly, and walk the machine slowly over. Remount on top. Same technique going down.
  • 15° is the maximum slope — period. Steeper slopes risk rollover; use walk-behind applicators instead.
  • On slopes, drive at a 45° angle to the incline — never straight across the face of a slope at 90°.
  • Do not turn the machine while on a slope or incline.
Operating beyond 15° can cause injury, machine damage, rollovers, and material spills.
Dry Product

Spreader — Know the Components

  • Hopper — 2.9 cu ft / 175 lb. Always use the screen when filling.
  • Spreader Gate — opens to drop product onto the spinner. Push forward to open, pull back to close.
  • Gate Rate Adjuster Dial — white cam on the hopper front; sets exact gate opening. Licensed persons only.
  • Vari-Rate Gate Stop — presets a 60% gate opening for trim work; tip the handle out to bypass for 100%.
  • Spinner Wheel & Speed Control — full ahead = wide pattern; pull back = narrow/trim (~7 ft). Move the lever only while the engine runs.
  • Accuway Spread Pattern Adjuster — black wedge that balances throw left/right. Re-adjust whenever the gate setting or product changes.
  • Trim Spread Border Patrol — deflector on the left side; pull back (ON) to keep product off walks, beds, and curbs.
Dry Product

Dry Application — Best Practice Routine

  • 1. Walk the property first. Drive the perimeter slowly and note every obstacle, hole, rock, or hazard before applying anything.
  • 2. Fill with the screen in place, using the product specified for the round.
  • 3. Trim pass: Border Patrol ON, go clockwise around the outer edge, left wheels ~6 inches inside walks/drives, gate at the 60% Vari-Rate stop (spreading right only).
  • 4. Obstacles: with the same trim settings, make a counterclockwise pass around trees, beds, and objects.
  • 5. Fill passes: stripe the lawn, throwing product to the center of your trim tire tracks so you get 100% coverage with proper overlap.
When trimming, prills coming off the front cover and left tire cover the strip beside walks — that's why you stay ~6 inches off the edge.
Dry Product

Trimming & Narrow Areas

  • Trim right, full width: Vari-Rate at 60%, Border Patrol ON, gate to the Vari-Rate stop. Pattern starts 2–3 inches left of the front tire and spreads right.
  • Trim right, narrow width: same as above plus Spinner Speed to NARROW — ideal for boulevard strips between sidewalk and street (5–6 ft pattern).
  • Narrow pass-through areas: Spinner NARROW + 60% gate = roughly a 9 ft or smaller pattern for gates and tight side yards.
  • Use the 3½ MPH speed lever for better control while spreading tight areas — but never combine spreading and spraying at that speed; the calibrations don't match.
Liquid Product

Sprayer — Know the Components

  • Pump — runs whenever the engine runs. Keep at least 1 gallon of water in each tank when not spraying to keep it cool.
  • Pressure Control & Gauge — should read 40 PSI while spraying. Set by licensed persons only — never adjust in the field.
  • Tanks — two connected 9-gal tanks; bypass flow provides agitation to keep product mixed.
  • Three spray controls: right = full (wide) nozzle, center = spray gun (hand wand), left = trim nozzle.
  • Nozzles — full and trim each apply 1 qt per 1,000 sq ft at 40 PSI and 5 MPH when calibrated.
  • Spray gun — has its own flow control valve for spot work.
Liquids only — wettable powders can plug the system. Premix product OUTSIDE the tanks, and never put a hose down into a tank (contamination risk).
Liquid Product

Spray Application — Best Practice Routine

  • 1. Walk the property first — same perimeter inspection as spreading.
  • 2. Trim pass: clockwise around the edge, left tire 2–3 inches off walks/drives, using the Trim Spray (3–4 ft wide, starting 2–3 inches left of the tire).
  • 3. Obstacles: counterclockwise trim-spray pass around all objects.
  • 4. Turning band: make a Full Spray pass 6 ft out from the trim tire track — this creates a ~13 ft band around the property for turning.
  • 5. Fill passes: spray straight across; shut off at the band, make a 180° turn, and run the next pass 9 ft from your last tire track for proper overlap.
Never use the 3½ MPH speed lever while spraying — spray calibration is based on full 5 MPH ground speed.
Calibration

Calibration — Licensed Persons Only

  • Calibration of gate settings, Vari-Rate stop, Accuway, and pump pressure is done only by licensed applicators — never adjusted in the field.
  • Time your machine: 111 ft in ~15 sec = 1,000 sq ft per 15 sec at the 18/9 ft swath; 166 ft in ~23 sec = 1,000 sq ft at the 12/6 ft swath. Re-time periodically as the machine breaks in.
  • Spreader: catch-and-weigh 60 seconds of flow (= 4,000 sq ft), adjust the gate dial until pounds match the product label rate.
  • Sprayer: with water only, catch the full nozzle for 60 seconds, adjust pressure (start ~40 PSI) until you hit 1 qt/1,000 sq ft; verify pattern width on pavement (~2 ft wider than effective swath).
  • Record everything — date, settings, product, and travel times in the calibration log.
Service Training

Daily Preventative Maintenance

  • Blow off fertilizer and debris every day with a blower or compressed air: around the axle (remove front hood), around/under the engine, inside and under the hopper (work the gate open/closed), and around the transmission.
  • Wash with water when needed (high-humidity days or weekly). Be thorough — water + fertilizer residue is extremely corrosive. Blow the unit dry afterward.
  • Variable speed pulley: clean with water while switching between wide and narrow. NO lubricant on the pulley. Blow water out with air.
  • Spray filter: ball valve OFF, remove and rinse the filter (no high-pressure air or water — it damages the screen), replace, valve back ON. Wear PPE.
  • Check engine oil and transmission oil levels.
Service Training

Weekly Preventative Maintenance

  • Grease all fittings: 2 front wheel spindles, 1 front wheel pivot (all years); front wheel fittings (pre-2011); steering arm (2016+). Wipe off excess.
  • Engine air filter: tap clean; replace if excessively dirty.
  • Carb linkage, choke, governor spring: blow clean, then work a DRY lubricant through the linkage (oil attracts fertilizer dust).
  • Check tire pressure; check engine and transaxle oil; inspect V-belts for wear.
  • Steering cables: check tension, adjust both sides evenly.
  • Nozzles: clean trim and broadcast tips — never with metal objects (damages the tip and ruins the spray pattern).
  • Check all cables (hopper gate, variable speed, throttle, trim guard) for smooth function.
Service Training

Service Know-How & Seasonal Care

  • Upright repair position: before tipping the machine up — empty hopper, drain tanks, ball valve off, remove battery and fuel, level surface, and use a properly rated lifting device that stays attached.
  • Parking brake: if the machine moves with the brake on, the crown nut on the transaxle needs ½-turn adjustments (usually caused by driving with the brake on).
  • Steering cables: tighten the clevis ends equally on both sides to keep alignment; 2015+ units have an adjustable stainless clevis. Front tires should toe out ¼–½ inch.
  • Transaxle: 20W/50 oil; change oil and filter at break-in, then every 400 hours, and purge air afterward.
  • Winterizing: flush the spray system, then run 1 gallon of RV antifreeze per tank through pump, valves, and tips. Battery on a maintainer; drain fuel or add stabilizer; full clean, grease, and inspection.
Safety

Safety DO's

  • DO read the manual, warning decals, and complete training before first operation.
  • DO wear the right PPE: safety glasses/face shield, gloves for chemicals and fertilizer, and hearing protection when needed.
  • DO read and follow chemical labels and SDS sheets for every product you load.
  • DO set the parking brake every time you leave the platform.
  • DO shut off the engine before servicing, inspecting, or unclogging anything.
  • DO keep all guards and covers in place and check brakes and controls before each shift.
  • DO let the engine cool before refueling, and use fresh gas.
  • DO dismount and walk the machine over curbs and on/off trailers.
Safety

Safety DON'Ts

  • DON'T operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or with stereo headsets on.
  • DON'T put hands or feet near moving or rotating parts — the spinner can throw objects at high speed.
  • DON'T operate on slopes over 15°, or turn while on any slope.
  • DON'T ride the machine while loading or unloading — ever.
  • DON'T carry passengers or let children operate the machine.
  • DON'T modify the machine, remove guards, or tamper with the governor.
  • DON'T refuel indoors, near flames/sparks, or while the engine is hot or running.
  • DON'T overload the hopper or tanks beyond rated capacity.
  • DON'T adjust calibration settings (gate dial, Vari-Rate, pump pressure) unless you are the licensed person responsible.
Safety

Chemical Safety & PPE

  • The T3100 does not protect you or bystanders from chemical exposure — during mixing, application, transport, or storage. Your PPE does.
  • Read, understand, and follow the chemical manufacturer's label and SDS for every product — application rate, mixing, handling, and required PPE.
  • Chemicals can be poisonous, cause burns, serious illness, or death. Protect against contact, inhalation, and overexposure.
  • Wear gloves when handling chemicals and fertilizers; wear eye protection around application and rotary equipment.
  • Premix products outside the tanks; never risk contaminating a water supply by placing a fill hose down into the tank.
  • Know the signal words: DANGER = will cause serious injury or death; WARNING = could; CAUTION = may cause minor injury or equipment damage.
Wrap-Up

Transport & Final Reminders

  • Loading/unloading: stand behind the platform and walk the machine up or down ramps using the speed control. Never ride it on ramps.
  • Tie down by the frame only — never the hopper, tanks, or other parts.
  • Freewheel lets you push the machine by hand — but it can roll away on slopes, so set the parking brake.
  • Keep 1 gallon of water per tank when not spraying to protect the pump.
  • Clean the machine daily — fertilizer residue destroys paint, parts, and bearings.
  • Questions? Ask your supervisor, check the full operator's manual, or call Turfco at 1-800-679-8201.
You're ready for hands-on practice. Review this deck any time — and when in doubt, the operator's manual is the final word.
